The project area, located on the city's outskirts, blends a semi-rural character with urban infrastructure. Bisected by major transportation lines, including the people mover, the area showcases the Po Valley and Emilian countryside's features. These artificial yet natural spaces connect urban infrastructure, residences, and productive areas, acting as potential hubs for future urban centers. Though their character remains undecided, they hold great potential for the city’s reinvention, enhancing life quality and addressing contemporary challenges. The area offers diverse possibilities: unexpressed social value in rural inns, extensive infrastructures linking it to Italy and beyond, and nature reclaiming spaces to transform them into urban parks. The surrounding countryside seeks closer integration with the city and its productive zones.
The masterplan synthesizes these elements. It envisions an urban landscape that benefits the community, environment, and city’s future, featuring sports facilities, playgrounds, and green spaces interwoven with advanced infrastructure. This masterplan aims to make public spaces environmentally productive, turning the district into a laboratory for the future, where infrastructures blend harmoniously into urban design, and the garden city model generates energy.
The flexible masterplan connects the new Bertalia-Lazzaretto district to Bologna, offering multifunctional spaces for sports, leisure, and social interaction. It creates a vibrant, year-round environment that engages both residents and the wider city, with public spaces extending into and around buildings. This dynamic approach fosters social interaction and transforms the district into a self-sustaining, productive urban park.
