The Grande MAXXI is, above all, a gesture of openness. Designing a large museum means creating a space with the scale, flexibility, and character to engage in dialogue with the city and the world. The storage areas and laboratories thus become an opportunity to establish an active artistic dialogue with the public space, a way to literally open the collection to the city. The urban space continues physically and visually within the museum; the building is a flexible and functional machine that, thanks to its transparency, sparks curiosity among citizens and interacts with the existing campus.

The square extends into the project, becoming almost like a theatrical set that defines the campus and the space dedicated to art. Within this urban “fold,” there is room for art—a flexible and complex system that introduces a new way to exhibit art. The concept of storage and museum blend together, and the works integrate with the urban space. The storage areas and laboratories become an active machine around the clock, a spectacle for the city, a large screen that interacts with the existing buildings and allows a selection of the collections to be displayed to everyone. The square, following the Roman tradition, is therefore defined by public activities but also by the scenic intent of the buildings. Experiencing the square, moving through the museum, reaching the hanging garden—all become ways to explore new perspectives of the neighborhood.
