The essence of this site is its dedication to public life. A space that has historically served as a hinge-point for meeting and exchange remains, to this day, the heart of Winnipeg’s public life. It acts as a vital connection between key public functions—from the station to the theatre, the museum, the park, and residential housing.
Each of these activities at The Forks has a distinct typology, unfolding within well-defined spaces. The challenge lies in designing the in-between spaces: those that accommodate public activities without a predetermined form or that are temporary in nature.
This space must adapt to varying traffic demands, host public events, and serve daily life under diverse climatic conditions. The project envisions a formless surface—a flexible platform capable of hosting the full range of the city’s events. It is a space designed for transformation, responding seamlessly to the city’s ever-changing needs and to the dynamics of its public.
