Within Milanese culture, La Scala plays a role that transcends the boundaries of the Opera House or the Music Theatre to become the symbol of an entire community; a Milanese excellence recognised throughout the world. In order to continue to be a central cultural, artistic, political and social meeting point, La Scala cannot avoid the continuous updating of its work guidelines - including its production spaces - and its diffusion within a rapidly changing city. The new location of the theatre’s workshops and warehouses in the Lambrate district therefore pursues a twofold objective. On the one hand, it will make it possible to find adequate space for a more efficient and rational process of cultural production. On the other hand, it will allow for the further development of activities open to the public and bring citizens closer to the world of theatre, renewing La Scala’s role as a civic institution immersed in the beating heart of the city. The project responds to requests from the local area and rethinks the public vocation of the whole Rubattino Area, making the neighbourhood even greener with the extension of the Lambretta Park and even more attractive with the creation of a large cultural, artistic and productive centre that will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The project will include spaces open to the public for creative and cultural activities, as well as production, storage and warehouse spaces for stage materials. Integrating the industrial landscape with the natural landscape, the new depots and workshops of Teatro alla Scala are conceived as a new city in balance with the rhythms of man and nature and the psychophysical well-being of both workers and visitors; a large “ensemble” of artefacts with an industrial character connected by large green spaces open to the surrounding landscape and by a scenographic aerial gallery that will act as a privileged observatory on the entire production process of the theatre. The proposal, both in its landscape and architectural aspects, is based on the mutual hybridisation of different paradigms and models, merging architectural quality, landscape quality, workplace quality and sustainability. Combining the careful restoration of the industrial archaeology present on the site with a proudly modern project at the cutting edge of technology and energy performance, the project gives shape to the vision of the theatre as a Magnifica Fabbrica and stands, in its entirety, as a place of active participation open to citizenship where the process of creation is deliberately showcased and shared.
