TEKNE
The project stems from the idea of restoring the area to its historical condition, evoking the agricultural fields and nature that once touched the city walls. For this reason, the parking lot is designed as a green space that can easily be transformed into a park in the future, should the needs change. The square thus becomes a true “carpet” suspended over the greenery of the old agricultural fields and the parked cars.
The square, with its simple shape, is connected to the historic center and Viale Vico, becoming a terrace among the treetops, open to views of the station and the church of Santa Maria in Betlem. The simplicity of the urban space ensures its flexibility and allows for an endless variety of events. In this way, the area becomes an active, central space in the public life of Sassari. Once an urban void and abandoned area, it transforms into a new focal point: a new type of square that adds to the catalog of existing squares in Sassari, each one distinct in shape, character, and function.
The square is an urban carpet, inspired by the design of traditional Sardinian carpets, welcoming the city’s public life.
The area was once characterized by the presence of vegetable gardens and agricultural fields, where the countryside and nature touched the city walls. The strong presence of greenery and the design of the parking and open spaces revive the historical layout of the fields, restoring the ancient natural condition to this urban void. The brownfield near the station is transformed into an area rich in greenery and biodiversity, where the presence of trees helps regulate summer climatic conditions.
